Two more calligraphy pieces for the iPhone app, Steps of a Disciple

I’m making an attempt to do a calligraphic treatment for each of the chapters in the gospel of Mark. One verse per chapter. Here are two more verses I worked on today that will be included in the next update for the app. Enjoy!

Mark 2:5 Calligraphy by Steve Husting for the iPhone app, "Steps of a Disciple" devotional

Mark 2:5 Calligraphy by Steve Husting for the iPhone app, “Steps of a Disciple” devotional

I used green and brown ink with brush for the SON, brown ink and pointed pen for smaller lettering. Small embellishments in the SON were made by gel pens and Crayola Window Markers.

Mark 8:29 Calligraphy by Steve Husting for the iPhone app, "Steps of a Disciple" devotional

I used the Pilot Parallel pen for all the lettering. The verse itself was lettered on watercolor paper (that’s why you see gaps in the lettering). The marks on the right were made by running a wet erase marker on watercolor paper, then applying misting to it, causing it to run. The Window Marker and wet erase ideas were introduced to me by my teacher, Barbra Close, in her workshops earlier.

Happy Birthday card

I created this card for my sister-in-law on Vellum, then attached it to colored card stock in the corners with sticky foam dots. I attached colored buttons to the corners to cover the dots.

I had fun doing the swirls and built-up lettering with blue and black Micron pens.

Mother’s Day card, 2012

I made this Mother’s Day card today. I made two, one for my mom, and the other for my wife’s mom. I used Parallel Pens and gel pens. My wife punched out the corners with one of her Stampin’ UP! corner punches.

A friend and I went to Walmart, where we ate lunch. Then while he went shopping, and I stayed behind at the table practicing calligraphy with my Shaeffer pen and 3×5 cards while looking through my iBook copy of Lisa Engelbrecht’s, Modern Calligraphy and Hand Lettering on my iPod touch. I got the idea of breaking up the lettering from one of the samples in the ebook. I had just finished taking her latest 3-session workshop on Letterista lettering at Barbara Close’s gallery.

Learn Gothic Calligraphy v1 is now on the iTunes App Store!

Version 1 was released this week. It features videos for the lowercase letters of this simple Gothic lettering style that anyone can do with a little practice. It’s at the low introductory price of only 99 cents! I’m working on version 2’s video editing and graphics for the uppercase letters and numbers. I hope to revise it to work on the iPhone/iPod touch as well as the iPad!

Learn Gothic Calligrapy sent to Apple for approval

I successfully sent version 1 of this new app to Apple for their approval process. It’ll take about a week or so for their review time before it becomes available, unless they find issues that require changes. So it should be available early May 2012. There is no screen-drawing capability in this app; it assumes you want to learn with pen and ink.

This version has more and better-looking resources than Learn Italic Calligraphy, as the following shows, so I hope users of that app love this one! Version 1 videos will include only lowercase letters. Version 2 will include uppercase and numerals.

New artwork: “Joy to the World”

I created this artwork, fashioning the word JOY out of the names of the person who is the reason for the joy.

Steps of a Disciple iPhone app updated with chapter 11

I’ve been updating my devotional on Mark’s gospel, Steps of a Disciple, chapter by chapter. I’ve included a few calligraphic works too. My goal is to have one artwork per chapter throughout all of Mark’s 16 chapters. It’s a challenge because I want the calligraphy style to match the mood or message. That’s always the tough part!
