“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him” (Colossians 2:6).
How did we receive Christ the Lord? When we heard the gospel and received it by faith. We realized that we were in need of a savior to save us from our sins. We knew we did not have it in us to save ourselves. God presented His Son to us and we believed, and were saved.
It was not supposed to stop there. We were not to go on in our own strength. We were to continue to believe. The Spirit will continue to show us where we are lacking. In those cases, we are to acknowledge our inability and find in Christ the ability.
We say, “This is too hard. I don’t think I can go on.” Then we find a name for Christ, our Strength. We believe, go on, and find the strength we did not have before. We are lonely, and despair of companionship. Then the Spirit introduces us to the name of Father of the fatherless, of Comforter, or the one will never leave us nor forsake us; we believe in the name, and are encouraged.
We are discouraged because nobody notices us; we feel like we are nobody; no one cares. The Spirit reveals the Father to us, that we are His children whom He loves; reveals the Shepherd to us, that we are His tenderly cared-for sheep; and we believe, and take heart. we feel afraid and insecure, then the Spirit reveals the Refuge and High Tower; we run to Him and feel safe. Faith is the victory!
According to one book, there are about 600 names, titles, and designations for God in the Bible. God wants to be everything to us.
As we have received Him, continue in Him. Our journey is a life-long discovery of our utter emptiness, and His utter fullness. “In Him is filled all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, and we are complete in Him,” we are told in Colossians 2:9, 10. He is our salvation, through and through. We are to find in Him all of our sufficiency, so let us stop taking only half a Savior and surrender completely to Him for all of our needs, for all of our life. Day by day, acknowledge Him as Lord and let Him lead and strengthen.
