Here are a few Scriptures to take a stand on:

1 Cor. 2:9-14
But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

As you can see, the Spirit wants to communicate the deep things of God to us.

John 10:14-16
“I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.”

Jesus says His sheep will hear his voice (just as the sheep of their flock know their shepherd’s voice).

John 14:21
“He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

Jesus gives commandments, teachings, and orders to His servants and expect them to obey Him. In this way He wants to be loved.

John 14:26
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”

The Holy Spirit will teach us. That means, as students of the Word, we will know that we are being taught.

John 16:13-15
“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.”

The Spirit will convey the words of Jesus to us. Jesus is seated with the Father above, and sends His messages to each of us through the Spirit.

Acts 9:10-16
Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.”
So the Lord said to him, “Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying.
“And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight.”
Then Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem.
“And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.”
But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel.
“For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.”

That was an example back-and-forth conversation between an unnamed “certain disciple” and the Lord. Yes, God speaks in words to His people and we can know without guesswork that it is from God. Hebrews 11 gives many examples of people of faith who clearly heard specific directions, and knew they were from God.

With that scriptural foundation out of the way, how exactly do we hear His voice?

The most obvious way is through His Word. If you don’t know how to have a morning time, my website has several Bible study methods you can choose from ( https://stevehusting.com/doubtbusters/category/bible-study-methods/ ). The point here is to put yourself in front of the Bible to deliberately seek to know His will. The Bible is the textbook for the student of Jesus. We want to hear the teacher, the Holy Spirit, speak to us, so we open the Bible and study it carefully to see what it has to “say” to us.

Pray and ask the Lord to speak and teach you. In reading the Bible chapter carefully, something may stick out that makes you want to know more. Start writing about it, paying attention to the words in the text so you don’t write about anything else but what is written. Then review the text and what you wrote. Consider: Is it a promise to believe? Something to obey? Is it a new facet of Jesus you did not know before, and you should give thanks and worship?

When you find yourself responding to the text practically, then you have received from the Lord, and you give thanks. This is one of the ways God gives wisdom. Day by day in our studies through the Word, chapter by chapter, book by book. The Lord has spoken to me many times in the Scriptures. When I follow through, then I get confirmation at times when God follows through in some way. When that happens enough times, then you realize you are hearing His voice and walking in partnership with God in obedience. He is leading you by the hand. It is a thrilling life!

But God speaks to us when we are away from the Bible as well. I have had many experiences of the Lord speaking. In my case, I am a writer, so He helps me write.
. A ghost writer has been giving me some writing assignments to augment my book manuscript. I consider the assignment and pause a moment, expecting to receive understanding from the Lord, then it flows, and I start typing.
. I have heard from the Lord repeatedly at 3am while I sit and wait on Him, pondering life; then He gives wisdom about what was on my mind, either as words in real time, or like an ‘awareness of His will’ clear enough for me to write it down later.

It really is true that you need to simply ask and listen. You cannot control God–true. But you can be humble and know your need of His wisdom at His timing. “Without Me you can do nothing,” Jesus said (John 15:5). He expects to speak to His lambs. Act like a needy lamb that is wholly dependent on the Good Shepherd, and watch what happens.

The Lord spoke to me a lot in my first year as a Christian. It’s all of grace–I did not deserve to hear His voice. I wasn’t a nice Christian back then. I had a lot of sin yet to work through. You are not necessarily an immature Christian. You just need training, and this mini-article can be the start of your journey into hearing the voice of God for yourself, and to walk as a lamb under His gentle guidance.

Does God speak to His people?
