“So Yahweh our God also delivered into our hand Og, the king of Bashan, and all his people. We struck him until no one was left to him remaining” (Deut. 3:3).
The Israelites battled Og king of Bashan until none of his subjects were left alive. God did not want any of the people to lure them away from God through their detestable practices and false idols. So they left no one remaining.
You confess your sin and repent. Repent means a change of mind. Formerly, you had no problem with sin. Now you see its corruption on your character and a blot on your enjoyment of the fellowship of the Lord and His people. You change your mind and view the sin with new eyes. You put it out of your life. You remove from your environs whatever sustained that sin. You remove all traces. You leave none remaining.
This you should have done when you first believed in Jesus. In Egypt, the Israelites were to remove all traces of leaven from their households as they trusted the blood of the Passover sacrifice they had applied to their doorposts. Remove all the leaven of sin from your house. You don’t want to corrupt yourself or those under your roof. Let Christ alone be honored.
You treat sin seriously now, for Christ died to save you from all sin.
The fact that the Lord says to leave none remaining implies that He has high hopes of the mission succeeding. The Almighty isn’t giving you false hopes. He doesn’t tell you to do something without equipping you for the task. You have been given every spiritual blessing in the heavenlies. He gave you armor that is more than sufficient to protect you from every scheme of the wicked one. The might of God is in you, ready to work when you act by faith in Him.
His promises give you confidence to run and not give up. To fight the good fight of faith. To pray and not grow weary. Until the skirmish is won and sin is gone.
