2 Kings 21 Chapter Summary
Breakdown:
1-7 King Manasseh reverted Judah to pagan ways and gods
8-15 The Lord spoke to His prophets of future judgment on Judah
16-17 Manasseh shed much blood; then he rested in the king’s garden
18-24 Amon became king and was assassinated after two years of forsaking the Lord 25-26 Amon died and Josiah took his place
Comparisons/Contrasts:
- Manasseh forsook God completely; Jesus loved God completely.
- Manasseh rejected the law; Jesus fulfilled the law, which shall not pass away.
- Manasseh built altars in the temple; Jesus came to dwell in His peoples’ bodies, the temple of the Holy Spirit.
- Manasseh followed in his sin to sacrifice his son in the fire; Jesus offered up Himself on the cross to break the power of sin.
- Because of Manasseh’s disobedience, Jerusalem will become a ruin. Because of Christ’s obedience, the heavenly Jerusalem will be established.
- Because of Manasseh’s sins, the remnant loses its inheritance. Because of Christ’s work, the believer’s inheritance is everlasting.
Meaning:
It used to be, in earlier decades, that movies looked to the future in hope, building dazzling utopias on earth and space-ward. Now dystopia elements reign, with today’s generation seeing a bleak future, their disenchantment with the status quo pushing them to despair and hopelessness.
1 & 2 Kings teaches that there is no guarantee of continuity of community values, whether of good or evil, as long as man is in charge. Hezekiah did great good; then in the very next generation Manasseh did great evil. The next generation erased all the gains of the earlier. For this reason, our trembling hearts for our times will become stable hearts when set on Christ’s return, for His reign alone will be an everlasting reign of justice, righteousness, and love.
