2 Kings 22 Chapter Summary
Breakdown:
1-7 King Josiah ordered the house of the Lord to be repaired.
8-10 Hilkiah the priest finds the Book of the Law and Shaphan the scribe reads it to Josiah
11-17 Huldah the prophetess answers Josiah’s inquiry that wrath will come on Judah 18-20 But wrath will be delayed until after Josiah is gone
Comparisons & Contrasts:
- The king saw the state of the house of the Lord. Jesus sees the state of His flock. Both need care.
- The king made sure the builders had the funds needed to build the house. Jesus provides sufficient grace for all His servants to rise and build.
- The king did not require accounting of the builders. Jesus does not require accounting now, but we will give an accounting to Him later.
- Josiah tore his robe in shock and guilt at the Book of the Law. The Bible today still brings heart reactions to those who hear the Lord’s voice.
- Huldah brought a harsh word because the people had provoked God to wrath. God’s people need to communicate the Word about sin to turn people to repentance.
Meaning:
Josiah had every expectation that the builders, masons, and others will be faithful, and need not give an account of their work. This is a picture of Jesus. He is building His church. He has proven faithful in everything, and the Father has said He is well pleased. Jesus received the name above all things, showing that He passed the highest bar and is sovereign over all things.
We can trust the Lord to be faithful to keep His promises for us. He will justify Himself to us; He need never give an account of Himself. Let us be careful to hold Him in the highest regard, worthy of all worship, for there is no other name given under heaven among men who has lived such a perfect life.
