Words for Warriors, “Do What Worked Before”

“Yahweh said to me, ‘Don’t fear him; for I have delivered him, with all his people and his land, into your hand. You shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon’ ” (Deut. 3:2).

The Lord has not changed the terms of deliverance. His mode of salvation from sin continues as always. As He did to Sihon king of the Amorites, so He will do with this new foe. When a new sin is exposed, approach victory as you would with any other sin. You acknowledge it as sin that ought not to be tolerated. You die to the sin as having no place in the new creation. The blood of the Lamb cleanses you of the sin. Now that you know of its existence, you watch and pray lest you be swayed anew by their feelings, lest you enter into temptation.

It doesn’t matter what the sin or wrongdoing is. You treat the smallest sins as those which are not welcome. You show all sin the door. No favoritism.

You do not reform the flesh. You consider sin already dead, for God has already broken its power by placing you in Christ Jesus. You now share Jesus’ victory. As His body went into the grave, even so your flesh sunk below. As Jesus rose from the dead, you as a new creation in Christ rose with Him, leaving the sin monster behind. This is your new identity. Dead to the sin principle, it has no more power over you. Now you consider, or affirm, this new truth of what the Lord did through His resurrection. The blood of Jesus is sufficient to cleanse you from all the sins that you confess.

If you confess and repent and fall into the same sin again, follow the same procedure. Do not deviate. Confess and repent, and thank your heavenly Father for Jesus, the Savior who died in your place, and makes you righteous by your faith and not your deeds.  Do not listen to the enemy thoughts as it tries to hammer you with grenades of guilt or daggers of depression. Truth is usually the first casualty in war, but God’s truth is your armor. Put it on as a helmet to protect your mind from the misinformation of the foe.
