The page for each character will show a drawing similar to the following. (This diagram showing the color-coded stroke sequence of a character is called a "ductus.")

As the "checkerboard" design in the drawing shows, the x-height of the lower-case letter (the height of the letter minus any descenders or ascenders) is the same as five pen widths height. Make the checkerboard pattern with your pen and rule the page to maintain the proportions of the letter.

As indicated, the pen angle should be kept at 45 degrees for this letter. Don't be afraid to turn it slightly to get thinner lines with some strokes.

I strongly suggest you follow the stroke sequence (shown to the right of the letter) if you are a beginner. Red lines are drawn first, then green, and so on, as shown by the numbers below in color by sequence order. Note the small arrowheads on the lines that indicate the direction of the stroke for that line.
