Because they really believe that their faith will give them peace.
Jesus offers peace, too–to His followers. But it isn’t the peace the world gives, like the other world religions. His peace is from a relationship with Him who died for them and rose again. It’s a peace with sins forgiven. A peace of no condemnation. A peace that comes from trusting the God who cannot lie, and who keeps His promises. Where no matter what happens, the Creator of all things is with you and has your back. You can trust in His grace. He will lift you up. This peace comes from reading the Bible and knowing who you are praying to. Over time, the relationship gets stronger and the peace deeper.
“Peace I [Jesus] leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27)
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Romans 15:13)
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)
This is the peace that comes from the only true God. It is not merely a peaceful feeling where anxieties are diminished for a time, which is what you are probably thinking of. It’s not from merely praying, but who you are praying to. Oddly, the peace God gives does not come by seeking peace itself, but by seeking Jesus Christ. He is the Prince of Peace, and in Him is peace. Because He is in charge of our lives, we can have peace.
